This wine is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley…cool climate Grenache from this Demeter Certified Biodynamic vineyard just south of San Luis Obispo. We planted this vineyard in 2005, so 14 years later it is definitely hitting its stride!
The Grenache is from a clone that we got from Tablas Creek, and the Syrah is a mix of clones: Alban, Estrella River and Clone 1.
2019 was a relatively normal year weather wise…not to hot not too cool, and we harvested the Grenache on October 11th at 24.6° brix, 3.39 pH and 6.7 acidity, beautiful balance, if a bit on the riper side (though other wineries that get grapes from the same block picked at even higher sugars!).
The stems were also nicely ripe, so we used 33% whole clusters in the fermenter. Fermentation was all done in small open top tanks, native yeast ferment, with manual punch downs, twice a day. After about 2 weeks the grapes were gently pressed and the wine transferred straight to neutral French oak barrels for aging. Grenache is an oxidative varietal and we handle it very much like Pinot noir is handled, minimizing exposure to oxygen once fermentation is complete.
It was then aged, on the lees, for 10 months. When it was time to bottle, the Syrah component was racked with aeration into a tank, and then the Grenache was added by gravity to again minimize oxidation. It was unfined, but did receive a light filtration for clarity…unlike Syrah, it is difficult sometimes to get Grenache to settle completely clear. Only 5 barrels, a20 cases of this special wine were produced.
This is classic cool climate Grenache…wild cherry color, and wild cherry and hard spice aromas. This is an elegant expression of Grenache and it should age beautifully for 10-15 years. This wine is Demeter Certified Biodynamic.
Cheers, Bob Lindquist
