86% Tempranillo, Oak Savannah Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley
7% Graciano, Ibarra-Young Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley
7% Grenache, Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard, Edna Valley
The Tempranillo for this wine was sourced from Oak Savannah Vineyard, a historic vineyard site in Santa Ynez Valley. The vineyard has been part of Zaca Mesa and was once owned by the actor James Garner. The vineyard was originally planted in the early 1970’s.
The grapes for this wine were de-stemmed and punched down twice a day. The wine was aged in 3 year old French barrels for 14 months. I blended the wine with the traditional Rioja grape varieties, Graciano and Grenache for a pretty balanced wine.
The wine is medium-full bodied and has a very pretty aromatic profile with sour cherry and rose petals and spice. On the palate there are tart cherries, tobacco, hard spice and cocoa. I love the unique focused flavors this wine has and I have loved the Tempranillo in barrel from the beginning.
